Whether for residential or industrial HVAC systems, an hvac transformer alters the input electrical power into another voltage that can be used by the system. When the input voltage connects to the commercial power in the transformer, it moves along a coil of metal-wrapped wire or the primary winding. The primary winding then directs the voltage towards the secondary coil, which consists of lesser windings thus reducing the power voltage.
In modern heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, climate control is regulated by a controlling device which is the thermostat. Thermostats make necessary adjustments in the indoor air temperature of a building accordingly to the known setting. From the HVAC system, the thermostat is powered using a step down transformer to achieve a safe voltage for use.
HVAC System Power
Depending on the type of HVAC system used, thermostat’s low voltage is the usually 24 volts. However, since household electricity employs 120 volts or 240 volts AC, the 24 volts is transformed to obtain the specific lower power. This reduced voltage is needed to manage the circuits that control the igniter, blower or fan, compressor, timer and other controls.
Warm indoor temperature is accomplished by burning the fuel source or using electrical resistance coils to generate heat. For older version of heating systems, a spark from the heating transformer is needed to ignite the fuel. For electrical systems though, no heating transformer is required for they utilize the line voltage.
Checking your air conditioner transformer involves electricity wiring and power. If you do not have knowledge in these areas, better let a qualified HVAC technician do the checking. In addition, this task requires tools that only contractors are adept of using.
